DUSD - School Board

Apr 16, 2009

The DUSD workshop on April 16, 2009 discussed

the following sports related subjects:

Fundraising efforts of DSAB.

Upcoming meeting with DSAB on May 7th.

Another potential sports related subject included:

Possibility of loosing 100 students if athletics are not reinstated.

The school board said that they've only had 24 requests for transfer to date.

This is the total number of requests and not athletic related requests only.

The board was informed that the parents were told to hold off

on submitting an inter-district request at this time

until a final decision is made concerning athletics.

Inter-district transfer reviews

do not need to be approved until 30 days prior to school opening.

Unable to locate the process for inter-district transfers

on the DUSD website, I forwarded a request

to the Superintendent and School Board.

These transfers requests, if needed, will be to attend

a high school other than DHS and a junior high other than CA Jacobs.

In the past 5 years, there have been an average of 70 more students

from Dixon requesting to attend school in another district

than students from outside Dixon attending a DUSD school.

The Superintendent stated that he does not plan to approve transfers,

however, this can be appealed to the county.

Any approvals will need a Letter from the Superintendent.

The majority of the workshop focused on the

closure of an elementary school (each elementary school was discussed).

The Superintendent's recommendation was to close an elementary school

in addition to establishing a first to third grade primary school

and a fourth to sixth grade secondary school

based on financial data available.

The majority of the school board disagreed with the recommendation

and a vote will take place at the May 7th meeting.

DUSD also discussed that the

Montessori School charter expires June 30, 2009

and NOT December 31st, 2009 as first thought.

Negotiations with the teachers should begin soon

to discuss layoffs and potential ways of cutting costs.

Maintenance does not save any appreciable amount of money by closing a school.

Closing some classrooms and having larger classes  helps.

The May 7th meeting is scheduled to take place at Gretchen Higgins

due to the anticipated crowd and opening day of the May Fair.
